Momentary Configurations: Reflections on Recent Works by Laura Arminda Kingsley, by Jaimie Baron

What does it mean to be a body, to exist as a biological entity? Much human energy over the past millennia has been focused on distinguishing ourselves from other forms of life. Clearly, there is something unique about us among living creatures—at least those that we are aware of. Yet, science tells us that all living beings are ultimately made of the same stardust that exploded into the universe during the Big Bang and, at least on Earth, emerged from the same primordial soup that gave rise to the first single-celled creatures.

Murmurs of the Deep: Laura Arminda Kingsley in conversation with Rachel TonThat

A fellow American expat in Zurich, I first met Laura this March at the Kunsthaus Zurich, where we got to know each other over conversations about painting and our many experiences living in Switzerland. Several weeks later, we met at her home and studio in Dubendorf to talk on the record about her artwork, influences, and upcoming performance in Solothurn.

Murmurs of the Deep

Through her project, Murmurs of the Deep, Laura Arminda Kingsley creates a pictorial world in which our communion with the cosmos and nature is unmediated by cultural valuations or static ideas of identity. To accomplish this, Kingsley looks at the world through the lens of deep time, giving equal importance to; the microscopic and the macroscopic; folklore and science; and the archaic and the new, to offer the viewer a non-hierarchical perspective in which to reconsider their place in the world. Installed on the escalators of the Leadenhall Building, Murmurs of the Deep invites viewers to immerse themselves in its freer, wilder world.

Womanifesto Magazine

Womanifesto Magazine is a magazine that celebrates the legacy of womanism by lifting up black and brown creatives. This issue, titled "The Inside of My Heart", features work that explores the things we hold dearest. Being published exactly one year after the first issue, we are excited to celebrate the Womanifesto Magazine anniversary with our largest, and most diverse issue yet. With such a broad prompt, our contributors shared deeply personal and warming experiences in a variety of mediums. Look inside to learn more about what that means for our creatives.
